India’s Biggest Live Photography Contest

With an aim to promote & cultivate photography culture & to bring photographers from across the country together, Canon India organized the 9th Canon PhotoMarathon 2019. It is the largest live photography contest of its kind. The previous edition was held in both Mumbai and Delhi, and attracted over 1800 individual participants. For the very first time, the Canon PhotoMarathon was exclusively held in the City of Joy – Kolkata, on February 9, 2019. It was a fun-filled all-day event, which attracted 500+ individual participants.

Unlike other photography contests where participants submit pre-shot photographs, the Canon PhotoMarathon is a live contest, where participants are compelled to go out, search and compose a shot. The participants were provided with 2 themes – Foodie Heaven and City of Joy, which they had to capture under the pressure of 2 hours for each theme. This competition not only tests a photographer’s skill, but also their vision & creativity to bring their understanding of the themes to life.

To encourage & recognize the talent of school students who aspire to become a photographer, Canon created a special Student Category for school students, competing on a single theme – Friendship.

The final submissions were judged by a panel of eminent jurists. The judges for PhotoMarathon 2019 were Ravi Dhingra (well-known lifestyle and commercial photographer), Rambabu Dhanishetty (a significant name in fashion and wedding photography), and Tejas Soni (acclaimed wildlife photographer).

The creativity of the participants is rewarded with very attractive prizes. The Grand Prize winner, Mr. Sammya Brata Mullick, won himself an experience of a lifetime – Canon PhotoMarathon Asia Championship – an all-expense paid mentored photography trip to Japan. Apart from the Grand Prize, there were many prizes for both the categories, which included cameras such as EOS 6D Mark II, EOS 80 D, PowerShot G7x Mark II & Selphy printers.

Canon had also partnered with a number of companies, such as Adobe India, SanDisk, JTB and Huion, that not only showcased some of their products and special offers at the venue, but also added their own attractive prizes for the winners.

Other than the prizes, the photography event provided a free ‘camera health check-up’, where Canon cameras could be thoroughly examined, and cleaned if necessary, by Canon’s technical service professionals, available throughout the day.
