My Wedding Camera: EOS 6D Mark IIAnoop Guha | Canon Photo Mentor

As a wedding photographer, I have come across some very common and typical questions.

Most of the people like to know which camera is best for wedding. Which is the best wedding lens? What do you mean by Candid Photography? and so on..

What I believe is that each photographer has his or her own priorities and perspectives. Some say it’s the gear which makes the difference and some believe the creative person behind the camera does the wonder. Each belief has its own logic. I personally say that photography is an art where 50% is creativity and 50% is equipment capability.

One’s creativity enhances with the visualization and the logic helps to draw or blend the imagination to reality which results in the final image.

While capturing weddings, I have always felt the need of blending myself with the families and the ceremonies during the entire wedding.

I normally prefer a gear which is simple and user friendly. Presently, I am using a Canon EOS 6D Mark II and today through this article I want to take this opportunity to share my experience with this gear.

More flexibility with angles with a Vari-angle LCD monitor

EOS 6D Mark II comes with is vari-angle LCD monitor, which enables you to shoot various compositions with unique angles. During the wedding shoot we click images from every angle imaginable – high, low, close, far. At that time, a touchscreen that flips and rotates in any direction, makes composing a picture in different angles so much easier.

The touch screen comes with a Touch Shutter feature. The Touch Shutter can be activated during live view and all you have to do is touch on the screen where you want the focus and the camera focuses and automatically captures the photo. It’s a pretty amazing and user friendly feature.

One of the best aspects of EOS 6D Mark II is its ergonomics and handling. Compared to professional full-frame DSLRs, the EOS 6D Mark II is considerably lighter and more compact, making it an excellent option for Wedding photographers who want to keep the weight and size of their camera systems to a minimum.

Auto Focusing Speed

In almost all lighting conditions the focusing has been quick and reliable. While covering Weddings there are unpredictable moments faced by the photographers.

You can’t afford to miss the shot because the focus struggles. EOS 6D Mark II comes with 45 AF points with all of them being cross-type which is fast and accurate. Thus one doesn’t lose that special moment.

While shooting with EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens I have realised that when I am using this lens with complete open aperture to get the beautiful background blur. Getting your subject in focus sometimes becomes very difficult because of the high shallow depth of field at f/1.4. Live view comes very handy during these shots when you want to compose the bride and grooms in various compositions. Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the new technology used for focusing while using live view results into extremely fast, smooth and responsive focus.

While shooting, I noticed it locks focus very quickly and the focus tracking in live view is just great. This feature comes very handy and helpful during the Wedding different ceremonies.

High Speed Shooting

Canon EOS 6D Mark II shoots up to 6.5fps continuous shots with each shot being at its maximum resolution 26.2 megapixel. It is considered to be fast enough speed to fulfil the need of a Wedding photographer while covering ceremonies like cocktail which involves a lot of dancing.

Image Quality

Canon EOS 6D Mark II a 26.2- mega pixel camera boasts a wide dynamic range which results in great Pre Wedding shoot which involves handling a lot of highlight and shadow area specially when the shoot is in open with bright sky. The detail with this camera is great even at high ISO’s (40000) especially at the price point and it also comes with great noise reduction performances.

Skin tone detection & colour tracking for more accurate autofocusing on human subjects

Wedding being a crowded place it so happens that when camera is on AF it has a tendency where autofocus falls on nearby or bright subjects. It might be a deal breaker especially when you are doing bride portraits. Now with the new metering system with EOS 6D Mark II it comes with a special add on IR metering. It has led to improved colour tracking and skin tone detection capabilities, which mean that no matter what your camera, will give preference to the bride skin tone and even if there is another object in the foreground or background still it will be able to focus on faces.

Network Connectivity

There is an App Canon camera connect which you can download from the app store both for android and IOS. It helps you to connect your phone via Wi-Fi and can transfer high resolution images. Your phone can also act as a remote trigger which comes so handy where you can take shots in crowded places during Weddings. Also if you want to share few images on the spot with the bride or groom family so that they can share it instantly on their social media this features comes really handy.

What in my bag?

Generally, I carry two camera bodies and my favourite lenses, which help me to cover the entire wedding with ease.

EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS II USM: Ideal for Contemporary Shoot

The lens gives ideal Optical Performance resulting in high resolution & contrast and nearly no distortion in class. It comes with special glass and costings which counter flares, ghosting & chromatic aberration. The USM auto focus motors makes this lens silent, quick and a balance lens for stable hand held shooting.

EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM: Ideal for Abstract Shoot

Doing close up or macro photography opens up a whole new way of seeing the unseen aspect of Wedding photography. This lens comes with 1:1 life-size magnification resulting in stunning patterns and intricate details of the subject in the frame not visible at the time of normal shooting. The large f 2.8 maximum aperture produces shallow depth of field with added advantage during low-light situations.  It has 100mm focal length with capability ideal for macro, close-ups and abstract shots in Wedding photography. This lens can be used on both Full frame and APS-C sensor cameras.

EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens: Ideal for Candid Shoots

The 85mm focal length is very popular focal length beautifully used during Wedding photography for Candid portrait. The large f/1.4 maximum aperture produces shallow depth of field, ability to captures at a fast shutter speed and easy operation in low-light situations. The 9-blade circular aperture helps create stunning bokeh effect in both stills and videos shooting

The Optical image stabilization minimizes the effects of camera shake by compensating up to four stops of shutter speed. The Ultrasonic Motor (USM) helps to deliver fast, precise and quite autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.   A lens which weighs less than 1000gm providing users the freedom to shoot handheld for long hours.

I am very happy using EOS 6D Mark II as one of my gears to cover Weddings. I can very comfortably say that is a professional grade camera which is bundled at such a good price point. I can say EOS 6D Mark II is a camera which can cater to all the photography needs of a Wedding Photographer.
