A Tusker on the hillock with opposite light is a dream for any Photographer who loves silhouettes .... During on of our trips in Bandipur,we came across an old Single Tusker. The bull had been in pursuit of a nearby female herd.He had caught their scent on the nearby hill & started walking in their direction. We knew he would reach the hillock and confirm the scent again.Hence we waited for about an hour & finally got a satisfactory slihoutte shot of him sensing his surroundings with his raised trunk. .... Elephants have a keen sense of smell, detecting water sources up to 20 km away using their trunk. Their trunks are in constant use moving back and forth, detecting new scents and information.Once a scent is drawn in through their nostrils, there is a series olfactory and chemical stimulus & response through Jacobson' organ(Organ responsible for a dogs heightened sense of smell). Then the elephant curls its trunk into its mouth, this is called the Flehmen's response. The same response is seen in Tigers, other big cats & help in detecting the reproductive status of the female individual.Shot with Canon EOS 1 D Mark 4. Focal Length 400mm F no 5.6 Shutter 1/160 ISO 1250 White Balance Manual
