The Anup Talao, also called Char Chaman Tank thanks to the four connecting causeways, is a magnificent, one-of-its kind water tank built in front of Akbar’s private quarters, the Khwabgah complex. This tank is square in shape and is constructed using red sandstone. The tank has a beautiful raised sitting platform in the centre and well-planned viewing and seating places around it. It is believed that Tansen used to sing on the centre-platform. In the old days, it was specially connected to the main water system to ensure a regular flow of fresh water into it. Abul Fazl, Akbar’s historian, mentions that the Anup Talao used to be filled with silver, gold and copper coins that shimmered in the rays of the sun and gave a stunning and mesmerizing look to the tank. They were then given away to charity supposedly worth millions.
